Spardium contains Sparfloxacin, a potent fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent with broad spectrum action against a wide range of bacteria pathogens including gram-positive, gram negative bacteria and intracellular pathogens.

 

COMPOSITION

Spardium: Each film coated, scored tablet contains 200mg Sparfloxacin.

 

INDICATIONS

Sparfloxacin is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms in the following:

 

  • Nosocomial & Community Acquired Pneumonia

  • Lower & Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

  • Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

  • Gonococcal & Non-Gonococcal Urethritis

  • Urinary Tract & Gynecological Infections

  • Enteric Fever

 

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Sparfloxacin can be taken with or without food. The recommended daily dose of sparfloxacin in patients with normal renal function is 400mg on the first day as a loading dose. Thereafter, one 200mg tablet should be taken every 24 hours for a total of 5-10 days depending on the type of infection and the resolution of symptoms. The duration of therapy is usually 5 days for most infections; Urinary Tract Infection requires treatment for 3 days, whilst the treatment for non-gonococcal urethritis and pelvic inflammatory diseases is for 7 days. Typhoid fever may require treatment for up to 10 days. In non-complicated Gonococcal Urethritis, the dose is 200mg as a single dose.

 

SIDE EFFECTS

Sparfloxacin is generally well tolerated. Nausea and vomiting were the common side effect experienced with the drug. Other side effects include photosensitivity reaction, diarrhea, headache, dyspepsia, dizziness, insomnia, and abdominal pain.

 

PREGNANCY AND NURSING MOTHERS

There are no adequate and well controlled studies of the use of sparfloxacin in pregnant women, however the use of sparfloxacin in pregnancy is not recommended. Sparfloxacin is excreted in human milk, because of the potential risk to the infants, the use of sparfloxacin is not recommended in nursing mothers.

 

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Sparfloxacin is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity or photosensitivity reaction. Sparfloxacin is contraindicated in patients with known OTC prolongation or in patients being treated concomitantly with medication known to produce an increase in the OTC interval and/or torsade de pointes (e.g. terfenadine).
